Hello, Earth – Best of Short Stories – a brand new publication of Brian’s own short stories (publication December 4th 2025) is available for preorder here at Waterstones or Amazon)
“Not for an Age,” a science fiction short story by Brian Aldiss, revolves around the protagonist, Rodney Furnell, who finds himself trapped in a repeating, unchanging day. Alien observers in the future have resurrected a moment from his life, forcing him to relive it endlessly without the ability to alter his actions. The story explores themes of repetition, awareness, and the nature of consciousness in the face of an inescapable, predetermined reality.
The Premise:
Aliens in a far-future society have developed technology that allows them to momentarily resurrect moments from the past. Rodney Furnell, a man from the 20th century, is unknowingly caught in this resurrection, reliving the same day over and over.
Endless Repetition:
Rodney is forced to repeat the same mundane tasks and experiences, like his son shaving and his wife getting up, without any possibility of changing his actions or the events around him.
Awareness and Observation:
Despite the repetition, Rodney is dimly aware of the fact that he is being watched and relived, and he even senses the presence of the alien spectators.
Themes:
The story explores themes of:
– Repetition and Predestination: The endless cycle highlights the feeling of being trapped in a predetermined reality, unable to break free from the daily routine.
– Awareness and Consciousness: Rodney’s growing awareness of the repetition and his place in the alien observers’ experience challenges his own understanding of time and existence.
– The Nature of Reality: The story raises questions about the nature of reality and how it can be experienced through different perspectives, particularly from a far-future alien point of view.
“Not for an Age” as a Title:
The title itself suggests the story is about a moment that is not meant to be repeated, but is forced into endless repetition by the aliens, highlighting the contrast between human experience and the alien manipulation of time.
In 1954, The Observer newspaper ran a competition for a short story set in the year 2500. Aldiss’s story Not For An Age was ranked third following a reader vote.
